What Is Momentum
in Trading?
Momentum describes how quickly and persistently price has been changing. A fast, sustained rise has stronger positive momentum than a slow drift higher. A sharp fall has stronger negative momentum than a gentle decline. Momentum describes recent force; it does not guarantee continuation.

What does strong momentum mean?
It means recent price changes have been relatively large, persistent or both. Strong positive momentum describes forceful gains; strong negative momentum describes forceful declines. The word “strong” refers to the recent movement, not the quality or safety of a trade.
How is momentum different from simply looking at price?
Price tells you where the market is. Momentum asks how rapidly it got there. Two stocks can both be up 20% over a year while having very different recent momentum if one climbed steadily and the other surged in the last few weeks.
How do traders measure momentum?
Some measures are very simple: percentage change over a fixed period or the difference between today’s price and a past price. Others use oscillators such as RSI or MACD to transform recent price behaviour into a line or bounded reading.
The indicator changes the presentation. The underlying evidence still comes from price that has already occurred.
Can momentum weaken while price keeps rising?
Yes. Price can continue making new highs while each advance becomes smaller or slower. That is one reason traders compare price progress with momentum progress.
Weakening momentum can be worth watching. It does not prove a reversal is about to occur.
