RSI Indicator,
explained in plain English.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator that compares recent gains with recent losses and plots the result on a scale from 0 to 100. The standard setting is 14 periods. Higher readings describe stronger recent upside momentum; lower readings describe stronger downside momentum.
Quick answer
What does RSI tell you?
RSI tells you how strong recent price gains have been relative to recent losses over the selected period. It does not measure company quality, valuation or future returns. It is a compact description of recent price momentum.
Why does RSI run from 0 to 100?
The calculation normalises the balance of recent gains and losses into a bounded scale. Readings near the upper end mean gains have dominated the recent window. Readings near the lower end mean losses have dominated.
A reading of 70 does not mean “70% likely to fall”. The scale is not a probability forecast.
What do 70 and 30 mean?
They are commonly used reference levels. RSI above 70 is often called overbought; below 30 is often called oversold. Those names are easy to misunderstand because a strong trend can remain above or below those thresholds for an extended period.
The reading describes unusually strong recent momentum. It does not issue a mandatory reversal date.
Why does market structure still matter?
An RSI reading has more context when you know whether price is trending, ranging, breaking structure or approaching an important level. A high RSI during a powerful uptrend is different from a high RSI after a short spike directly into major resistance.
Use the oscillator to add information, not replace the chart.
BowerLine rule
RSI is a translation of price, not a second market.
If price changes, RSI changes because the calculation is built from price. Treat it as another view of the same evidence rather than an independent oracle.
